Almeria increased its 32,827 hectares of greenhouses to almost 48,000 hectares by having two cultivation cycles

According to data from the Andalusian Ministry of Agriculture, in the 2020/21 campaign, Almeria had a greenhouse area of 32,827 hectares, which increased to 47,911 by having two cultivation cycles in part of the greenhouses. The province grew 3,495.83 million kilos of fruit and vegetables, i.e., 3% less than the previous season, and achieved a turnover of 2.787 million euros (+33%).

A total of 2,319.23 million kilos of this production has been destined for export, i.e., 6% less than in the 2020/2021 campaign, for a value of 2,954.48 million euros, 19% more than in the previous campaign.

In this campaign, producers devoted 12,574 hectares (+2%) to growing cucumbers in Almeria greenhouses. They produced 979.6 million kilos of cucumbers (+2%) worth 814.46 million euros (+7%) at an average price of €0.83/kg.

A total of 8,187 hectares were devoted to tomato cultivation (-3%), yielding 716.74 million kilos (-1%), which were sold at an average price of €0.95/kg.

A total of 5,614 hectares (+6%) were dedicated to cucumber cultivation, which produced 584.14 million kilos (+6%) worth 463.76 million euros, 56% more than in the previous campaign. The average price of cucumber grown in the campaign stood at €0.79/kg.

Zucchini cultivation occupied an area of 7,927 hectares (-2%) which yielded 476.71 million kilos (-2%). The zucchini production's value stood at 352.2 million euros (+53%) and an average price of €0.74/kg.

Almeria's farmers used 2,387 hectares of greenhouse (+5%) to grow eggplant, obtaining 222.84 million kilos of this vegetable (+5%) worth 131.76 million euros and an average price of €0.59/kg.

Producers devoted 219 hectares (+23%) to green beans, which yielded 4.22 million kilos (+23%) worth 8.29 million euros (+54%) at an average price of € 4.29/kg.

There were 9,095 hectares (-5%) of watermelon, which yielded 438.1 million kilos (-20%). The production was worth 278.22 million euros and had an average price of 0.63 euros per kilo.

Producers devoted a total of 1,908 hectares of greenhouses to melon and produced 72.47 million kilos in the 2021/2022 campaign. The melon production had a value of 57.39 million euros and an average price of 0.79 euros per kilo.
