Onion production Indore district to rise as acreage is up 11%

Production of onion may reach a new high this year since acreage under the crop has increased. The acreage is up by over 11 per cent in Indore district in the past two years to over 14,000 hectare, as per the official data. In Madhya Pradesh, the area under onion cultivation has risen by around 22 per cent since 2018-19 covering about 180,000 hectare. The average estimated productivity of onions has also jumped to about 30 tons per hectare.

A horticulture department senior official, said: "Madhya Pradesh has become the second largest producer of onion. Acreage under it has grown significantly to 1.8 lakh hectare. Malwa is one of the major onion cultivating belts of the state."

According to the official, in the ongoing rabi season, farmers have so far sown about 76,000 hectare in Madhya Pradesh of which 1,292 hectares was covered in Indore district.
