Police later recovered about half of the stolen crop

Ten tons of almonds stolen from Murcia farm as thieves bring in tree shaker

Farm break-ins are unfortunately very common throughout Spain in the summer months, and with thieves becoming ever more sophisticated in their methods, it is not unheard of for farmers to lose their entire harvest in one go. This was the case at a farm in Abanilla, where two thieves managed to steal an entire ten ton crop of almonds in just one morning, using a tractor and machine designed to shake the crop from the trees.

Luckily for the farmer, an off-duty Guardia Civil officer spotted the tractor and thought it was suspicious that it was driving around with no lights on before dawn. He alerted his colleagues from the Local Police of Abanilla who located the two thieves.

The owner of the farm was contacted and he reported that about ten tons of the Marcona variety of almonds had been stolen from him. Later, 5,320 kilos of the fruit were found in a warehouse in Barinas owned by a relative of one of the suspects.
