It is called Bon Bon Melon and it is the (registered) trademark of the Italian company Fornari. "We have designed a specific packaging for this melon, which has to be perfectly spherical to carry the brand name. Moreover, it has to weigh between 1.3 and 1.5 kg," said Damiano Fornari.

However, what most distinguishes the new product is its type, which comes from crossbreeding different varieties of Charentais. "Bon Bon is characterized by a high Brix degree. On 30 June 2021 it was 18-19. The current cultivation takes place in Tuscany, but from 20 July to 20 August 2021 the cultivation will take place in Fucino, at high altitudes, because only with a temperature difference between day and night do you get the best quality for Bon Bon Melon."

This year, about 20 hectares are in production. According to plans, next year the areas will be increased to ensure the continuity of supply to the retail trade. Currently, the main sales channel is through the wholesale markets.

"The packaging has a nearly square format, so that four Bon Bon melons with a predetermined weight and a perfect spherical shape fit perfectly into it. All melons that do not fall within the predetermined canons are sold without a brand name. They are still good, but not worthy of Bon Bon," said Fornari.

The melons will be available until the end of September. The smell and taste resemble those of tropical fruit. "It is not enough to have a high sugar content. We have to have balance with acidity and aroma. We lose some shelf life, but we gain taste."
