At this point in time, reefer ships –also called banana ships- are rarely arriving in Hamburg. The goods are now mainly delivered by container.
At the Port of Hamburg, HHLA's Frucht- und Kühlzentrum(FKZ) has suitable technical handling technology and ground-handling vehicles for both reefer vessels and container ships. This is quite essential when unloading goods, as the cold chain cannot be interrupted.
In addition to fruit handling, the FKZ also offers climate-controlled storage. There are 13,000 conventional storage spaces. There is also a fully automated hall where 8,300 pallets can be stored.
