Yigit Gokyigit on the Turkish Black Bursa fig season

Turkey will export more figs this year thanks to increased demand

In Turkey the season for Black Bursa figs has started once again. One Turkish exporter has noticed an increase in demand, in both the European and Asian markets. It’s expected that the export volumes of Turkish figs will be higher than before.

The Turkish Black Bursa fig season is in full swing and according to Yigit Gokyigit, marketing coordinator for Alanar, everything has been smooth sailing so far: “The current season is great! We have a very good crop this year. Figs are of great quality, with high brix level and durability. I think demand for the Bursa Black fig, which is the most well-known variety of Turkey, is higher than usual this year. This increased demand should result in Turkey exporting more figs than before.”

Alanar already has a foothold in the European and Asian markets, but is looking to expand in new territories this season: “Our main focus this year will be reaching new into new markets. As always Germany is our major market, but in addition Alanar figs can now be found all over Europe. Alanar figs are also highly popular in Asia, especially in Hong Kong. Demand from that part of the world also seems higher this season. I’m so glad to see the current demand on Alanar’s figs. This demand is something you can only create in having multiple successful years. There is a big trust on our brand, from all over the world; from Canada to Africa. This trust in our company and produce makes me very happy,” Gokyigit says.

To prepare for a good season, Alanar has invested in new machinery for the figs, as well as creating new packaging for its customers: “In order to provide the best possible figs with best possible service, we have always been working on developing ourselves. This year, we invested on the most advanced technology fig sorting machine, made in France. We also moved to a new facility in Iznik region in Bursa for our fig operation. For packaging, we have new designs that we introduced to our customers this year. We always listen to our customers, trying to see what they expect and anticipate by creating new designs based on their needs.”

It’s been more than half a year since the coronavirus started spreading in the world and that world has changed since then. Gokyigit can’t help but notice this change, as he suddenly spends a lot more time in Turkey than he normally would: “The biggest change is a lack of business trips. However overall I would say we currently have even more contact with our clients and partners, as we keep in touch over the phone more often, as well as making use of teleconferences. As Alanar, we also have special program called #KeepInTouch that was born after Covid-19 took hold of the world. We come together with our business partners through the part of the program frequently.”

Besides traveling to visit partners and clients, there is also the lack of physical exhibitions this year. Gokyigit can’t wait for the day that these trade fairs are able to return to their usual formats: “It is unfortunate that most exhibitions are being canceled or moved to a digital form. I wish events like Fruit Attraction and other exhibitions we normally attend abroad could take place. We have always been glad to see our customers there, but unfortunately that will not be the case this year. I sincerely hope we will be able to get back to normal practice in 2021.”

“We are very happy with the ongoing fig season in Turkey. Alanar’s strength lies in the unique ability to provide figs all year round through its 365-day fig project, in which we grow figs in different locations in the world.” Gokyigit concludes.
