Francis Binst, Binst Breeding & Selection

"Alegria is in the top five of Belgian potato varieties"

Binst Breeding & Selection promoted its potato varieties during the Fruit Attraction in Madrid, including the Gala and Alegria varieties. "We see that the new potato varieties are replacing the old and late varieties," says Francis Binst of Binst Breeding & Selection. “Bintje was one of the largest varieties years ago, but it is currently in decline. The older varieties simply cannot take it anymore and have too many problems, which costs the grower a lot of worries and labour. The late varieties are also often replaced. Due to the heat of the summer and the heavy rainfall of the past weeks, the late varieties had a lot of problems. By making less use of late varieties, you reduce the risk of the climate that has bothered us much in recent years. ”

“The Alegria potato variety has been doing extremely well in Belgium in recent years and its share is still growing. The variety is also doing extremely well in Spain and the other European countries. Alegria is an early and versatile potato variety, suitable for both the fresh market and the French fries industry. The variety has a high yield and is very resistant to various viruses and scabies. But our other varieties are also doing very well. We notice that the market is evolving and is looking for better, stronger and more beautiful varieties with good characteristics, but also with a beautiful presentation," concludes Francis.
