Italian e-grocery company expands into Poland

Supermercato24, a European crowd-sourced e-grocery company, has announced the acquisition of Szopi.pl, the only on-demand grocery delivery service in Poland.

With this agreement, Supermercato24 will grow internationally and expand its business into Europe, paving the way for its upcoming launch in the Polish market as well as leveraging a strategic network of retailers to start building presence in the new market.

This acquisition comes as the first step towards an international expansion strategy supported by specialized investors FII Tech Growth, 360 Capital and Innogest.

Supermercato24 is an Italian same-day e-grocery marketplace, allowing customers to choose their favorite nearby supermarket online and to pick between multiple products and promotions. Then, a personal shopper tracks down products in-store and delivers them to the requested address on the very same day – or in as quick as an hour – having the chance to interact with customers to propose a replacement in case of missing products.

Launched in 2016, Szopi operates in Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw and Poznan and delivers from some of the largest Polish supermarkets and discount stores, such as Carrefour, Auchan, Biedronka and Lidl, having delivered more than 100,000 baskets so far. The business model is the same: users just have to visit the Szopi.pl website and compile their shopping list in their favorite store - then, a specifically trained shopper carries out the shopping for them. The service will become available in other locations shortly.

Szopi founders will become an active part of the company, focusing on Business Development and Operations.

“We are delighted to welcome Szopi.pl in the Supermercato24 team” said Federico Sargenti, CEO at Supermercato24. “We both regard the wide range of available stores as the ultimate benefit for our customers and we are confident that joining our forces will allow us to develop our business in Poland much effectively and at a faster pace”.

“We are very happy to become part of the Supermercato24 family and to develop together a new and improved offer for our Polish customers, based on the team’s expertise, commercial ties and technology" said Zbigniew Płuciennik, founder and CEO of Szopi.

The Szopi platform will be integrated in Supermercato24 at the beginning of 2020.
