In recent days, two big Murcia-based entities in the fruit and vegetable sector have started the proceedings to determine their solvency and deal with the debts they accumulate with their suppliers. Both have announced their filing for bankruptcy within less than a month.
The firms in question are Agroherni, with more than 2,300 hectares of productive land in Spain and England, and El Niño del Campo, of La Hoya, in Lorca.
Agroherni, an agricultural cooperative that has been active since 1996, and which is specialized in the production and marketing of lettuce, has informed its workers and suppliers that the loss of two lines of credit has caused this decision, which is the previous step to the suspension of payments and judicial intervention. With a commercial network that reaches more than 20 countries, its debt amounted to 20 million Euro at the end of 2016, according to the information revealed by 'Murcia Diario'. As stated on the company's own website, Agroherni is considered "one of the most relevant in the sector in the European market."
With regard to El Niño del Campo, the company from Lorca also started the proceedings for the filing of bankruptcy in July due to serious short-term solvency problems. This company has also seen some of its financing lines disappear.
The firm, founded in 1999 by an agricultural producer in the area and also specialized in the cultivation of lettuce, among other vegetables, has undergone significant growth in terms of facilities and production volume in recent years. El Niño del Campo products are exported to destinations across Europe, but also to North America and to various countries in Asia and the Middle East.
