"The kohlrabi is a true messenger of Spring, and in Seeland the season has just started for real, but we still have the vegetables in our assortment all year round - if we can not get them from Switzerland, we source them from Italy, Spain, Germany or the Netherlands," says Romeo Ceroni of etter & berno AG in Ried, Switzerland.
Both supply and demand are very good, which is common for this season, says the marketer. He expects a steadily, high demand until the middle of the summer. The price of kohlrabi is 70-80 centimes (€0,36-0,72) apiece. "These are not very good prices, but it's okay, as the kohlrabi is more of a modest vegetable. It is however still a classic, to be found in every shop."
The kohlrabi is almost exclusively an open field vegetable, although theoretically it would be possible to cultivate it under glass: "It would be quite possible to produce the vegetables in a greenhouse, but this would not really pay off."
In addition to the fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy products and baked goods, etter & berno AG also offers convenience items that are produced in-house.
