In the Supply Chain Awards 2018, presented in Antwerp, Belgium, on November 20, EPS and Delhaize received the prestigious award for their project 'Reverse Logistics Distribution Center of the Future'. This award is given to the company that can demonstrate the best practices in projects for the supply chain integrating aspects related to purchases, storage, production and logistics.

With its project 'Reverse Logistics Distribution Center of the Future', EPS is optimizing the use of reusable transport items in the supply chain.

Pieter Thijs, Director of Logistics for EPS in the Benelux, says that: "This award is an acknowledgement of the hard work, energy and vision that have allowed us to develop such an exceptional project. We are proud of our processes, which are beneficial to the entire supply chain, and we are honored to have been chosen as winners of the Project of the Year Award."

Euro Pool System has become a market leader in the fresh and packaged food chain in Europe thanks to its reusable and collapsible packaging. The award-winning project groups or lets reusable packaging to customers across Europe. The entire process, from start to finish and back to the beginning, is under control. It is in charge of grouping containers and reusable transport items, tracking each container and offering a reverse logistics service to return items from stores to service centers for maintenance and replenishment, all with extraordinary efficiency.

The project offers many advantages:

  • Minimizes the work of the Distributor, since it is no longer necessary to classify or count containers in the stores.
  • It guarantees efficient data exchange (EDI) between all links in the supply chain. This is achieved by means of barcodes and/or RFID tags in each container, bar codes for each load and RFID tags on the trucks.
  • Optimizes efficiency by having the warehouse management automated and ensuring a smart and fully automated management of people.
  • It delivers accurate counting and identification of returns, which results in 100% transparency in all points of the supply chain.
  • Improves efficiency in service centers through container washing, quality control, label removal and sorting.
  • Provides full tracking of all returnable containers.
  • Reduces CO2 emissions and water consumption.

The jury took all this into account when selecting a winner from the five finalists (Biocartis, Euro Pool System / Delhaize, ODTH, Snack Food Poco Loco / Loglfow and Wase werkplaats / MURIS) in the Project of the Year category. It is a well merited victory for EPS.
Now the company will be able to compete to obtain the European Award for Logistics Excellence, organized by the European Logistics Association.
