Turkey: Growers disappointed with exports of watermelon to Russia
The price of watermelons dropped to 0.10 USD per kg ın Yuregir, Adana which is quite disappointing for the growers. They were also expecting massive orders from Russia during the World Cup 2018 where the demand for the products was estimated to increase significantly but so far these expectations were not met.
Yuregir Chamber of Agriculture Chairman, Mehmet Akin Dogan: “The harvest of watermelons is still underway in Adana, the biggest watermelon production region in Turkey. Turkey is the second biggest grower of watermelons in the world after China. Adana is responsible for 20% of this production."
"The watermelon harvest started about 4-5 weeks ago when it was sold at around 0.40 USD per kg but now the prices have dropped to 0.10 with the decline in exports. So far World Cup has not increased the demand in the Russian market as we had expected, we are hoping this trend will change soon. If we can re-start with the exports, the prices in the domestic market will also go up consequently. We are also currently working to trademark watermelon from Adana and we have already filed our application.”
