Banana growers in Mayiladuthurai have reported crop losses after strong winds from Cyclone Ditwah brought down about 1,500 banana trees in Aarupaadhi village. Farmers said losses exceed roughly Rs1 lakh, around US$1,200, per field and asked the government to provide support, noting that similar weather events occur every two years.
According to a horticulture department official, the district has averaged 511 hectares of banana cultivation over the past five years. Of this, 37.1 hectares are currently inundated. The official said 48 farmers are cultivating bananas in the district.
A grower from Aaru Paadhi village under Tharangambadi taluk said the damage occurred ahead of planned harvesting. He stated, "Farmers across Mayiladuthurai district grow banana trees in large numbers. In Aaru Paadhi village under Tharangambadi taluk, I had raised banana trees on three acres and had planned to harvest a part of the crop for the Karthigai Deepam season and the remaining in the coming month. On Saturday night, strong winds brought down 300 trees." He said the trees were ready for harvest and estimated losses at more than Rs1 lakh. He asked the government to consider compensation due to repeated weather impacts on banana farmers.
A horticulture department official said damage assessments are underway. The official added that farm owners will be eligible for compensation if the affected crop area exceeds 33 per cent loss.
