The Association of Producers (AOP) Cénaldi takes stock of the 2025 pea, bean, and flageolet season.
Despite very hot weather in June, storms and torrential rain at the end of August, the 2025 season for vegetables for processing "has produced positive results overall. Yields remain decent on the whole, despite weather conditions that slowed down sowing and generated disparities between crops and production basins."
For peas, results vary from region to region
"While some plots were not sown due to drought in coastal regions, others benefited from good weather conditions to develop well. In terms of health, aphid and disease pressure remained lower than in previous years, despite late blight in the southwest of France. With 22,560 hectares sown (-15.6% vs. 2024) and 147,440 gross tons (-16%), the 2025 campaign remains average, with yields varying due to the large number of abandonments (9%) caused by factories not being able to absorb the volumes. While the north of France has exceeded its program, with a very good campaign, the west and southwest of France are not meeting their forecasts."
A drop in bean sowing
"There has also been a drop in bean sowing, with 21,520 hectares sown (down by 10% from 2024), but less than the 11% decrease initially forecast. Plantings in the southwest have been badly hit by seed fly, hail, and storm damage. In the north, harvests were good despite a few quality problems, while in the west of the country, hot weather and excess water had an impact on harvests. The harvest is set to come in at 260,000 tons gross, down by 12% from 2024. The national average yield is down by 0.1 t/ha. The abandonment rate is 6%, compared with 5% in 2024. However, there has been a shift in the varieties grown, with an increase in flat beans (representing 17% of plantings) at the expense of ultra-fine and butter beans."
A smaller flageolet crop
Finally, flageolets total 2,000 ha sown in 2025 (down by 47% from 2024) and 11,850 gross tons harvested (down by 50% from 2024). The average yield (6 t/ha) remains lower than in the last five campaigns (-0.3 t/ha). For beans, yields are lower than in 2024 (6.5 t/ha). There was 2% drop-out, mainly due to viruses that caused dwarfing and yellowing of the leaves.
The Cénaldi AOP brings together all producers of field-grown vegetables for processing (frozen and canned).
