Strong domestic demand for vegetables, but prices are disappointing

"We are almost at the end of our aubergine, pepper, and cucumber campaign. At the same time, we are harvesting and marketing courgettes in a variety of colors and styles, including light green, dark green, and both flowered and non-flowered varieties, which will be the main focus of our autumn offerings," says Alessio Mattia, sales manager with the Italian company Agrieuropa.

On the commercial front, Mattia explains, "Demand from the domestic market is high for light green courgettes, both with and without flowers, as well as for dark green ones. However, yields are low due to a higher incidence of virus infection and lower temperatures during this period. As for other products, such as aubergines and peppers, demand is good, but prices have always been low. We are, nevertheless, happy with the current level of outgoing cucumber volumes. We are about to start with the winter crops. First, we will harvest long turnips, then market kohlrabi the following week. We will gradually increase production of the other winter crops as well. We started marketing valerian a couple of weeks ago, and so far, demand is well aligned with supply. We expect to reach full production in a few weeks."

Agrieuropa is involved in producing, processing, and packaging vegetables. The company operates in the heart of the Agro Pontino (Pontine Plain), in the province of Latina, Lazio region, specifically across the municipalities of Terracina, San Felice Circeo, Sabaudia, and Pontinia. Agrieuropa cultivates 400 hectares of land, 303 of which are covered by greenhouses. The remaining 100 hectares are cultivated in open fields. During the winter campaign, Agrieuropa handled various salads, including valerian, spinach, and rocket, as well as courgettes, parsley root, long turnips, round turnips, kohlrabi, radishes, and carrots. Most of these winter products are exported.

"We are ending a disappointing summer campaign for watermelons. Starting in July, the market collapsed, and the trade was disastrous until the end. We even left unsold watermelons in the fields and warehouse," he says.

"As for the winter campaign, we are currently focusing on transplanting and paying close attention to the presence of insects and the general phytosanitary condition of our crops. Since we anticipate that the upcoming period will be challenging, we are carefully planning economic and cultivation investments for the winter campaign."
