Two of Taiwan's lychee varieties have recently been granted Australian Plant Breeder Rights (PBR), the Agriculture Ministry announced on Wednesday. The two varieties, "Colorful Lychee" (Tainung No. 6) and "Early Big" (Tainung No. 7), now join two other Taiwanese lychee varieties already holding PBR verification in Australia.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) continues to focus on improving lychee varieties and expanding their international presence. The institute noted that securing overseas variety rights forms part of its work to strengthen Taiwan's fruit tree industry internationally. TARI said it will continue cooperating with the Australian government, industry stakeholders, and academic partners to establish a variety licensing system and identify potential licensees.
TARI explained that PBR is necessary for legal market entry and for ensuring the long-term development of new varieties, including ongoing research and breeding work. The institute cited the example of Australian "Pink Lady" apples, noting how brand development has allowed breeders and growers to benefit commercially.
Taiwan is home to a broad range of lychee varieties. TARI noted that climate change has affected the sector and highlighted the potential of extending the production season by aligning cultivation in both hemispheres. The institute sees variety development and licensing as a tool to support industrial growth in the fruit sector.
