Mexican avocado supply picking up

Mexico is seeing a more typical avocado harvest this year. "It's a well balanced size curve with retail sizes readily available," says Aaron Acosta of Villita Avocados. "The U.S. market can be rest assured that its demands for avocados will be satisfied with this growing season."

This comes following the anticipation of a very smooth transition between the flowerings this year. "Mexico is actively monitoring fruit maturity to ensure that smooth transition," says Acosta, noting that Mexico is steadily raising its market share from slightly below 50 percent over the summer to its traditional volume level of 90 percent between now and the end of the season in June.

As for avocado demand, it's been steady and now strengthening as fall is about to set in. "However, like many other commodities, we are affected by the economic pressure on American consumers," Acosta says. "At the end of the year, we'll either look at dollars or pounds and realize that it was a win-win for the American consumer in the industry."

Value in pricing
He does add that he anticipates that pricing at the retail level will reach the point where consumers see greater value.

Looking ahead, to help continue to move fruit, he also believes it will be critical that the industry organizations and marketing boards continue to communicate with consumers that fruit is available year-round and will reach their pricing targets. "I think avocados as a whole will find favor both economically and quality wise from the consumer this year," he adds.
