Customs discounts and new routes open up regional markets for Afghan agriculture

Afghanistan plans to export fresh fruit to Russia and Central Asia

Afghanistan plans to begin exporting fresh fruit to Russia, Central Asian countries, and the Persian Gulf in 2025, as part of a broader strategy to boost its agricultural exports.

According to officials, Afghanistan is also targeting new markets in India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Representatives from the Afghan Chamber of Commerce noted favorable trade conditions with Russia and South Asian countries.

A key development supporting this expansion is Uzbekistan's decision to reduce customs duties on Afghan exports by 80%. This creates an opportunity to establish new trade corridors through Central Asia.

Currently, many Afghan farmers are forced to sell their crops at low prices on local markets due to limited access to international buyers. The list of potential export products includes watermelons, melons, apples, apricots, and grapes.

Efforts to diversify trade routes come in response to challenges with traditional export pathways through Pakistan and Iran.
