Vietnam forecasts 30% rise in lychee yield

Vietnam projects a lychee yield of 303,000 tons, marking a 30% increase from last year, as reported by the Plant Production and Protection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. Favorable weather and effective disease management contribute to this rise.

The northern province of Bac Giang leads with 165,000 tons, followed by Hai Duong with 60,000 tons, Hung Yen and Lang Son each with 22,000 tons, and Dak Lak with 21,000 tons. Harvesting occurs in two phases: early-ripening fruits from May 20 to June 10, and the main crop from June 10 to July 25, necessitating early logistical preparations.

For production and packaging management, 469 production unit codes cover nearly 19,400 hectares, and 55 packaging facility codes are issued for export markets including China, Australia, Thailand, Japan, and the US. These facilities are regularly monitored and have completed registration for the 2025 crop year.

Since April, the Department of Plant Production and Protection has collaborated with international plant quarantine agencies to finalize documentation and inspect processing facilities, including three irradiation and three fumigation sites, all approved for the 2025 crop.

Japan has agreed to allow Vietnam to oversee lychee processing for export, eliminating the need for Japanese supervision, thereby reducing time and costs for growers and exporters. Quarantine units and food safety labs are prepared to support export activities from June 1 through the harvest.

Domestically, 60% of lychee production is expected to be consumed, with the remainder exported. Despite reaching over 20 countries, 90% of Vietnam's export volume is directed to China.
