Bayer is advancing sustainable initiatives through programs like Bayer Forward Farming (BFF) and the Better Life Farming (BLF) Alliance. These initiatives address challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Vietnam while promoting agricultural transformation towards innovation and sustainability in key crops such as durian.
Natasha Santos, Bayer's global head of sustainability and strategic engagement, visited Vietnam to engage with farmers in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands. The focus was on sustainable practices in collaboration with stakeholders, including the NAEC and the Western Highlands Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute.
During her visit, Santos and the Bayer Vietnam team interacted with rice farmers in Can Tho, where the BFF initiative is transforming rice cultivation. This aligns with Vietnam's plan to convert one million hectares of rice production to high-quality, low-carbon systems by 2030. BFF has achieved reductions in seed usage, nitrogen fertilizer, and greenhouse gas emissions, along with water savings.
In Dak Lak, the BLF initiative supports durian farmers in addressing climate change and residue management. Results at demonstration durian farms in Dak Nong showed a decrease in diseases and pests and an increase in yields, with fruit quality meeting export standards. BLF centers offer comprehensive solutions, including plant protection and market linkages.
