The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB) is working alongside the Sarawak government to target a 14% annual increase in pineapple plantation areas, aiming for a total of 20,000 hectares by the end of 2030.
This collaboration seeks to position Sarawak ahead of Johor as the leading pineapple producer in Malaysia. MPIB Chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali emphasized the provision of assistance to Sarawak to facilitate this growth, anticipating additional funding in the 13th Malaysia Plan.
Since MPIB's involvement in Sarawak from 2010, the region has seen significant development from smallholder farms to a current total of 2,288 hectares, marking a 7% growth rate per annum. As of 2022, Johor accounted for 11,398 hectares, followed by Sarawak and Pahang with 2,288 and 1,361 hectares respectively.
The pineapple industry's export value in 2023 reached RM 5.75 billion, with Singapore being the primary importer.
