Exploring new pineapple cultivation in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is initiating efforts to cultivate the MD 2 pineapple variety, also known as Super Sweet pineapple (Ananas Comosus), a globally popular fruit variant. The directive comes from the Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Amaraweera, who has tasked the Department of Agriculture with providing immediate cultivation recommendations for this variety within Sri Lanka.

Despite Sri Lanka's recognition for its indigenous pineapple variety, which enjoys global demand, the MD 2 variety has not yet been cultivated in the country. This variety is noted for its sweet taste and low acidity. Under the Agriculture Sector Modernization Program, preliminary research into the cultivation of the MD 2 variety in Sri Lanka has shown positive outcomes. Following the guidance of the Crop Release Committee, the Agriculture Department is now expected to outline detailed cultivation recommendations for this new pineapple type.
