The value of Spain's fruit and vegetable imports from Portugal has increased by 84% over the last five years, reaching €359.5 million, while the volume has grown by 9% and reached 340,007 tons.
From 2019 to 2023, the value of Portuguese vegetables imported by Spain increased by 103% and totaled €160 million. Tomatoes and potatoes are the most imported in terms of value, with €77 million for tomatoes (+109%) and €21 million for potatoes (+63%).
In terms of volume, Portuguese vegetable imports grew by 19%, totaling 200,413 tons, of which 82,797 tons corresponded to tomatoes (+20%) and 53,749 tons to potatoes (+18%).
As for fruits, imports grew by 71% in terms of value, amounting to €199.5 million, with kiwifruit, raspberry, avocado, apple, and blueberry as the most imported products. Kiwifruit purchases stood at €44.7 million (+172%), raspberries at €44.6 million (+325%), avocados totaled €19.8 million (+134%), apples reached €16.4 million (+31%), and blueberries, €12.2 million (+187%).
In terms of volume, imports in 2023 amounted to 139,594 tons (-3%), with apple, kiwifruit, orange, raspberry, avocado and blueberry accounting for the largest volumes. The most imported fruits five years ago, oranges and apples, saw their volumes drop. Apples recorded a 10% drop and totaled 29,643 tons, while the volume of oranges fell by 62% and stood at 13,703 tons. Their value dropped by 61%, down to €10.2 million.
Kiwifruit imports amounted to 29,322 tons (+114%); raspberries totaled 9,310 tons (+267%); avocados reached 7,315 tons (+91%), and blueberries saw their volume grow to 3,086 tons (+189%), according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes, processed by FEPEX, which confirms Portugal's position as the second largest supplier of the Spanish import market, behind France.
