Vietnam has more than 870 durian growing areas and packing facilities issued with codes eligible for China

Vietnam has secured codes for 876 durian cultivation and packaging zones from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), facilitating future exports to the Chinese market. With a consistent high yield and the ability to harvest year-round, Vietnamese durian benefits from shorter shipping times to China. In 2023, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value surged to US$5.6 billion, a 66.7% increase from the previous year, largely due to a significant rise in durian exports, which soared to $2.1 billion from $288 million. The majority of these exports, specifically 99.4%, were directed towards China, totaling $2.03 billion in value.

The early months of this year saw a continuation of this growth trend, with exports exceeding 70% to reach $970 million, led by durian and other key fruits like fresh coconut and dragon fruit. Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, now meeting the stringent standards of markets in the US, Europe, and Japan, are poised for accelerated export growth.

Efforts are underway between Vietnam and China to facilitate the export of coconuts and frozen durians, aiming to boost export value to $6.5 billion by 2024. The durian cultivation area in Vietnam's Southern provinces has expanded to 62,173 hectares, with significant growth also noted in the South Central Coast and Central Highlands regions. With the global durian market projected to reach $28.6 billion by 2025, there's a burgeoning opportunity for Vietnam, contingent on sustainable industry development and enhanced quality and processing standards.
