New Zealand aids Vietnam in expanding its passionfruit sector

In an effort to bolster Vietnam's passionfruit industry, New Zealand scientists are set to transfer horticultural expertise, following a commitment announced during a meeting between Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his New Zealand counterpart, Christopher Luxon. The initiative, dubbed the 'Viet Nam Climate-Smart Fruit Value Chain' project or VietFruit, aims to double Vietnam's passionfruit exports with a NZ$6.24 million investment.

Leveraging a decade of experience in enhancing Vietnam's dragonfruit sector, which saw significant yield and quality improvements, Plant and Food Research scientists are now focusing on passionfruit. According to Chief Executive Mark Piper, the project will encompass a range of techniques from cultivation to export strategies to elevate the economic status of local farmers and the nation. The collaboration also anticipates reciprocal benefits, offering New Zealand valuable insights from the partnership. This endeavor is part of broader efforts to support Vietnam's agricultural development, climate resilience, and workforce skill enhancement.
