Vietnam aims to enhance its durian export market

Vietnam is making strides to solidify its position in the durian export market, aiming to enter the billion-dollar export league by leveraging its current advantages and improving fruit quality. The nation is keen on unlocking the potential and broadening its global footprint in this sector.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), Vietnam boasts over 110,000 hectares of durian cultivation, yielding nearly 850,000 tonnes annually. The primary regions for durian cultivation include the Central Highlands, occupying 47% of the total cultivation area, followed by the Mekong Delta and the Southeast region, accounting for 30% and 19% respectively.

The preference and high selling prices in import markets have elevated Vietnamese durian above other agricultural exports such as pepper, dragon fruit, and rubber, with the cultivation area expanding by nearly 25% annually over the past five years. Do Ha Nam, Chairman and General Director of Intimex Group, highlighted the lucrative nature of durian farming, with profits reaching up to 2 billion VND per hectare annually, significantly surpassing those from other crops like coffee and pepper.
