Farmers in KwaZulu-Natal face economic strain following devastating floods

KwaZulu-Natal is feeling the economic strain as the aftermath of devastating floods takes its toll on the agricultural sector. The flood damage to crops, livestock, and infrastructure is extensive. Also, with further rainfall predicted, there are concerns for the province's already fragile economy.

According to the provincial government's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Super Zuma, the estimated damage to agricultural land and infrastructure is around half a million rand. This figure is preliminary and subject to further assessment to fully comprehend the flood's impact on the province. Zuma expressed concern that the damages could set back the agri sector significantly.

He highlighted the districts of Uthukela and Umgungundlovu as the worst affected, with significant crop and livestock losses. The severe weather also resulted in the tragic loss of two farmworkers due to lightning strikes.

On December 31, storms and heavy winds caused significant crop damage in the Bishopstowe area. Zuma stated that the department is working closely with farmers to assess infrastructural damage and provide necessary assistance.

Meanwhile, Andile Tshona, acting spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanitation, confirmed that there has been minimal damage to water infrastructure across the province and the country.
