Vietnamese durians have been on Chinese market for half a month and the price remains high

It has been nearly half a month since the first batch of Vietnamese durians entered the Chinese market. The entry of Vietnamese durians has not lowered the price of Thai durians as expected, but the price of durians in various markets has been rising.

At present, the Vietnamese durian on the market is mainly Golden Pillow. According to the feedback from the market, it is not inferior in taste and fragrance compared with the Thai Golden Pillow in the last season, and the overall quality is even better. The Vietnamese Ganyao durian, which will be listed soon, has won great attention from the market with its flavor, which is different from the Golden Pillow, and the price is expected to remain steady.

Almost all of China’s imported durians last year came from Thailand. In 2022, Thailand had a bumper year. It is expected that the annual durian production will increase by 22% compared with the same period last year. In addition, Vietnamese durians with relatively low prices have also entered the Chinese market. Logically speaking, the import volume of durians in the Chinese market is in a state of surge, but the price has not fallen but has risen. Why?

The first point is that during the National Day period, the domestic demand for durians increased. It can be seen that the price of durians increased every day during this period.

The second point is that it is now the end of the Thai durian season. At this time last year, it entered a "durian shortage". The arrival of Vietnamese durians just filled the off-season gap. However, Vietnamese durians have recently entered the country through the main gate, and their market share is limited. The quantity of durian is not large, and the price is naturally high.

The third point is that the price increases are naturally due to the good quality of the durians. Many Thai durians imported this year were affected by the blind expansion of local plants and the slow customs clearance due to the pandemic. The quality of the fruits is uneven, and the products with poor quality are sold on electric tricycles, street trucks, and small stalls everywhere. However, durians of good quality are more popular in the market, and it is normal that the price increased.

The entry of Vietnamese durian into the domestic market was supposed to help reduce the price of durian, but no one expected the price to rise. The price of durian will not fall in the short term. After all, Vietnamese durian has not entered China in large quantities, only a small volume has arrived to test the response of the market. If the response is good, it is estimated that the supply of durians from Vietnam will gradually increase.
