CuauhtĂ©moc RamĂrez Romero, head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), stated that Michoacan's avocado exports had increased by 25.3%. He also highlighted the economic importance of this fruit for the state, which exports 2.3 million tons of avocado a year with a customs value of 7.6 million dollars, generating at least 310 thousand direct jobs in the state.
The head of Sader stated that the National Agro-food Health, Safety, and Quality Service (Senasica) has certified a total of 49,005 avocado orchards, covering an area of 152,712 hectares, to increase Michoacan's avocado exports to the United States in the upcoming season that begins in October and ends in April.
Likewise, 72 avocado balers have been certified, as they complied with the requirements established in the Amendment of NOM-066-FITO-1995 and in the Work Plan for the Export of Hass Avocado from Mexico to the United States.
Michoacan produces 1.8 million tons of avocado on 181,924 hectares, accounting for 70% of the country's total cultivated area and 80% of the production value at the national level.
The state of Michoacan produces 82.1% of the avocado produced by Mexico, followed by Jalisco with 7.3% and the State of Mexico with 4.1%. Michoacan's main avocado-producing municipalities are Uruguayapan, Tancitaro, and Salvador Escalante
