Malaysia: Infrastructure ready to turn Betong into Sarawak’s food basket

Betong Division is one of the twelve administrative divisions in Sarawak, Malaysia. According to Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Agriculture Modernisation, Native Land and Regional Development, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, at this point in time, infrastructure and several preparatory facilities are already in place to turn it into the state’s food basket.

He said plans and programmes to gradually increase food production in Betong Division are being implemented to incorporate the Betong/Sarikei Food Basket and the Sadok Agropolitan to be the state’s main food production centre.

“They are the Simpang Layar collecting, processing and packaging centre (CPPC) for durian as well as another one in Spaoh, while the area farmer organisation office is being upgraded to modernise the processing of pepper, Nipah sugar and kelulut honey,” he added.

“We need to start production in three years from now as by then the Bebuling STOLport (airport) will be ready to airlift our produce to the markets,” he said.
