In the north-west of Bangladesh, Thakurgaon mango growers are deeply worried despite what seemed to be a great yield. This is because several hundred hectares of mango orchards are inundated as a result of heavy rains for the last several days.
Around 500 hectares of mango orchards in the low lying areas of the district went under rainwaters due to torrential rain, making it difficult for growers to harvest mangoes.
Growers are now harvesting their produce riding on makeshift banana rafts as most of the chards went under water in five counties.
In the last few years, many farmers in the district have turned their crop lands into mango orchards as it looks to be a more profitable crop than others. Many farmers said they could not nurture their orchards properly due to the incessant rains. Apart from that, they have to spend more on transportation of mangoes to Dhaka as truck owners charge excessive fare taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic.
