Singapore supermarket signs exclusive deal to stock Taiwanese produce

The trip that Kaohsiung mayor, Han Kuo-yu, recently undertook to Singapore has successfully expanded markets for Kaohsiung farmers. The NTUC Fairprice supermarket company, which is the largest in Singapore, will stock its shelves with a variety of Kaohsiung’s agricultural products for the next three years, according to an agreement signed on February 26.

The agreement gives the supermarket exclusive rights to sell produce from Kaohsiung in the city-state for the next six-months. Assuming the Kaohsiung products will be popular among consumers, other companies may be spurred to sign deals with Kaohsiung, or potentially other Taiwanese municipalities, once the six month period of exclusivity ends.

Taiwannews.com.tw quoted FairPrice chief executive, Seah Kian Peng, as saying: "We look to different countries around the world to source for our products, to ensure stable food supplies at good prices whilst providing variety and choices for our customers … we will be able to bring greater value to our customers for these high-quality agricultural products"

The agreement also calls for the supermarket chain to hold two food fairs promoting Taiwanese produce each year for the duration of the three year contract.
