Prices currently slightly higher

Germany: ‘Scarcity of yellow peppers after Christmas’

The Christmas season has led to slight shortages on the pepper market. Yellow varieties in particular are available only in small quantities. As a result, the popular paprika mixes with the reds, yellows and greens have become a bit more expensive. The market is expected to be stagnant in the coming weeks.

A small survey among traders shows slight scarcity in the paprika area. As a result, the prices have been somewhat tighter. For the current diameter of 70-90 millimeters, the current prices fluctuate around 1.40-1.50 per kg. The varieties with a larger diameter tend to go for around 2 euros per kg. On the whole, however, the pepper traders speak of a satisfactory market. Above all, the quality of Spanish goods is referred to by some marketers as 'top class'. During the holidays, the snack mixes were also relatively popular. This demand is currently somewhat less.

Swept clean
At wholesaler Uhlemann GmbH, goods from Spain are currently preferred. “This product is more uniform in quality than the product from eg Morocco. There is an according price difference of about 10-15 percent. The German consumer is very demanding; therefore it is important that the goods have a great, consistent look,” says managing director Andreas Zögner. “Currently, yellow peppers are in great demand because of their scarcity. At Christmas, there were several retail promotions and the market was swept clean somewhat. After that, the prices went up again, suddenly. Of course, these are factors coinciding.”

The wholesaler supply caterers, in particular, and is not very interested in special items such as snack paprikas, unlike convenience foods. “These are especially interesting for the market. We mainly supply processed, cut and washed ready-to-eat goods. That's our specialty. Regarding peppers, these ‘To Go’ foodstuffs are generally very popular because of all the single households. Furthermore, there is more and more emphasis on quality and good nutrition. That is beginning to trickle through as well.”
