The representatives of the associations of producers and exporters of bananas from Ecuador will appear before the Subcommittee on Food Sovereignty on Tuesday November 21 to discuss a project to reform the Law that regulates the production and marketing of bananas, plantain and other related musaceas.
The Food Sovereignty commission began to analyze the reform project presented by legislator Patricio Mendoza (CREO), who proposed that the exporters of bananas and plantains (barraganete) assume the cost of the evaluators in the packing facilities and the administrative expenses caused by that task.
Eduardo Ledesma Garcia, the Executive Director of the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador, and Byron Paredes Monteros, the representative of the Association of Banana Producers of Ecuador, have confirmed that they will appear before the Subcommittee on Food Sovereignty.
According to Mendoza, the goal of the project is to apply a fair and equitable treatment so that there are less distortions of intermediation in the exchange processes and economic transactions.
The project proposes that the values resulting from the cost of the evaluators in the packing facilities and the administrative expenses incurred, be assumed compulsorily by the marketers. To do this, the respective sales contract of the fruit must include a clause that specifically determines this fact.
This reform, added the legislator, will prevent an imbalance in the commercialization of the fruit. It is indispensable to introduce a reform that regulates the cost of the evaluators of the product and the expenses of the evaluation, which are currently fixed by the buyers.
