Significant rise in potato prices expected in Jordan
Saadi Abu Hammad, a fruit and vegetable trader and exporter, has predicted a significant rise in the prices of potato and onion varieties in Jordan due to the decrease in their availability locally.
"Potato prices are expected to rise by 20 percent this month, as the potato season in Palestine is nearing completion, which means that imports will stop and there will be lower volumes available," he said.
He explains that Jordan needs about 400 tonnes of potatoes daily, of which the country imports between 150-200 tonnes. According to Abu Hammad, the Ministry of Agriculture has made the move to import potatoes from Turkey and Europe, but "the arrival of these shipments may be delayed, which means there will be a gap in the product's availability."
