US: Acme Fresh Market launches grocery delivery and pickup service
Acme Fresh Market has launched a new grocery delivery and pickup service through the website OrderAcme.com. Grocery delivery, including a personal-shopper service, will be available to customers in most of Acme's zip codes. The grocery and general merchandise retailer recently surpassed 500,000 deliveries, and is on-pace to make more than a million deliveries by year-end. Meijer launched its grocery delivery service in September 2016. The program, which kicked off in 25 stores in Detroit, expanded to more than 200 stores in just 148 days. To date, the service is available to more than 10 million households in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Kentucky, Meijer reported. (drugstorenews.com)

CA: Walmart says it has reduced food waste
In the year since CBC Marketplace went digging through the trash at Walmart, the company says it has reduced its food waste in Canada by 20 per cent. The company says it has since stepped up its efforts to cut down on its food waste. The retailer said that the company tries to "salvage as much as we possibly can" by discounting food when it's close to its best-before date to try to sell it quickly. If there's one rotten apple in a bag, Roberton said staff will remove it, rebag the rest and lower the price. (cbc.ca)

Walmart launches new supermarket concept in Brazil
Walmart Brasil has launched a new supermarket concept, Walmart Supermercado, as part of its retail transformation project. The retailer's 120 supermarkets under the banners Bompreço, Nacional and Mercadorama will begin to adopt the new brand over the next four years, following an investment of around R$500 million (€130.5 million). Georgia ‘still a focus’ for Lidl
German hard-discounter Lidl is determined to forge ahead with its plans in Georgia and beyond, despite reports to the contrary. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reported that Lidl is “dramatically scaling back” its store expansion plans in Georgia, but the retailer said it remained committed to the market.
