During the first half of this year, 31,437 tons of pears and 9,731 tons of apples were sent from the Alto Valle to the United States. The data comes from a study prepared by the National Service of Agro-food Health and Quality (Senasa) on fresh fruit exports.
In order to achieve exportation, in Rio Negro and Neuquén fruit control tasks have been carried out since 1998, at the Villa Regina Plant Protection Center, where the Export Committee (COPEXEU) acts as a link between the health agencies of both countries: SENASA and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the US Department of Agriculture. "The pre-shipment entomological inspection to load the steamships is carried on site in the port of San Antonio Este," explained the agronomist and entomologist of the Regional Center Patagonia Norte del Servicio, Eduardo Parra.
In this sense, he detailed that during the 2017 season four export operations of fresh fruit of pip and stone, "were made by steamship, accounting for 235 items, which added to the 607 that came through containers and totaled 842 items."
According to the records, the pre-shipment operations to the US ranged from the first half of January to the second half of July. During this period 2,345,613 packages of pears, 636,583 packages of apples and 5,000 of plums were exported to that destination, totaling 2,987,196 boxes.
Varieties exported
The varieties of pears sent were: Abate Fetel, Bartlett, Red Bartlett, Red D'Anjou, Red Sensation, Forelle, Alexander Lucas, Emperor Alexander Brown, Packham's Triumph, Beurre Giffard, Beurre D'Anjou, Beurre Bosc, Golden Russeting Bosc, Autumn Bartlett, Winter Bartlett and Tongre.
The apple varieties dispatched were Autumn Greeting, Braëburn, Fuji, Cripps Pink, Gala, Royal Gala or Tenroy, Granny Smith, Red Delicious and Piñata Roho 3615.
In addition, Larry Ann is the variety of plums exported this year, "in two lots coming from Allen, inspected in the first half of February," says the Senasa professional. And he reports that the packaged total of the three orchard species inspected, "this year amounted to 842 lots and 43,566 pallets".
