Strong volume on organic rhubarb this season from the Pacific Northwest

Spring is here, which means organic rhubarb production is underway in the Pacific Northwest. "This is one of the top rhubarb-producing regions in the U.S.," says Jess Hardin, a buyer at Organically Grown Company. "Our customers eagerly await this crop every spring, grown organically by our longtime grower partners in Oregon's Willamette Valley, in the ideal microclimate along the Willamette River."

The Pacific Northwest is one of the top rhubarb-producing regions in the U.S.

This year the season is starting earlier and the volume is strong on the fruit whose stalks are ruby-red, sturdy, and full of classic tart flavor. The fruit thrives in colder weather and Hardin says that Oregon's winter created excellent growing conditions. "The rhubarb grew slowly but steadily, which helped it turn a vibrant red hue," he says. "Our region's maritime climate brings just the right balance of mild and cold temperatures along with rain and sun. Spring temperatures above 40°F break plant dormancy and stimulate growth, which is why Northwest-grown rhubarb has earned a reputation as a standout and is the first to market."

As for the demand for organic rhubarb, it's steady. Since the season started earlier this year, the product was also available for Easter promotions and celebrations. "Big beautiful displays drive movement," says Hardin, adding that pricing is similar to the last two years. "Rhubarb is a unique item and has many fans and it's also a discovery item. We're encouraging retail customers to give this special crop a prominent spot and share product information to inspire impulse purchases." He also adds that with organic strawberries coming on, retailers are promoting these two items together to inspire springtime baking, desserts, and jam-making.

"Rhubarb is a unique item and has many fans and it's also a discovery item," says Hardin.

Emerging rhubarb uses
Organic rhubarb is also getting a lift from the general increase in demand for organic produce. "Organic rhubarb is full of the minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins that health-conscious consumers want. Natural food shoppers are excited about adding this superfood to their diet and are looking for rhubarb grown without synthetic chemicals," says Hardin. "Chefs and mixologists are excited about rhubarb's tart and tangy flavor, and we see this ingredient showing up on cocktail and food menus, which will drive home chef inspiration."

Looking ahead, Mother's Day is another holiday that offers a promotional opportunity for the perennial crop.

The season is expected to last into June on organic rhubarb, a crop in which weed management and the labor required for that can be a challenge for organic growers.
