Sparking a debate over the marketing method

Coles' customer sees 'Green Skin' stickers on Shepards avocado

In Australia, the avocado market experiences a shift in variety availability across the year, with Hass avocados being accessible from May to January and Shepards from February to April, peaking in March. This period marks a notable preference divide among consumers, as some express dissatisfaction with the Shepard variety, describing its texture as 'waxy' compared to the softer, creamier Hass.

Controversy arose when a Coles' customer observed 'Green Skin Avocados' stickers on Shepards, sparking debate over the marketing of these avocados. Despite Hass avocados dominating the market with 83% of annual production in 2021/22, Shepards, which are exclusively grown commercially in Australia, hold a 14% share. The discussion extends beyond texture and taste preferences, with some consumers appreciating Shepard's firmer flesh and longer shelf life. This conversation underscores the diverse opinions within the Australian avocado consumer base regarding these two varieties.
