Australia: Soil fungus hitting NT banana trade

Northern Territory banana growers are warning of a shortage of local fruit next year. They say the destructive soil fungus known as panama disease has destroyed almost every commercial planting of Cavendish bananas. Darwin grower Mark Smith says bulk fruit will have to be imported from North Queensland next year to meet local demand.

"It's shocking. It's basically devastated our farm at Lambells Lagoon, to the point that we are not going to plant any more bananas," he said. "We definitely do two-thirds of the bananas in the Territory. It'll mean that we have to import bananas from north Queensland." "If they get another blow over in north Queensland, I would be more worried about imports from the Philippines and South America."
