First UK spring onions hit the shelves

The first UK grown spring onions hit the shelves this week, volumes remain relatively small until the peak season in the next month or so. The season usually runs from now up until around the beginning of October.

Import company Jacana Produce, had some of the first spring onions this week. Mark Stuart from the company explains, "Although predominantly an importer we will always buy local where possible and our spring onions are grown right on our doorstep in the Vale of Evesham, with Worcestershire in general being a big spring onion growing area for the UK."

Volumes are still low but with the warm weather he expects the yields to increase rapidly. "So far the early season samples have been good with a strong flavour and crisp bite," according to Stuart.

Egyptian spring onions have now finished so demand has so far been good for the UK product with freshness being the main selling point as the product will usually be delivered to customers on the same day as harvesting. "We continue to see increased competition from Mexico, who supply spring onions 12 months of the year which are usually available at a cheaper price. An increasing number of customers will continue to use Mexican product all year and never make the switch to the UK product."
