Guy de Meyer, Demargro:

Leek prices up to 60 cents per kilo'

There is quite a lot of demand for leek at the moment and the prices are relatively good for this time of the year. This was said by Guy de Meyer of export company Demargro. "On the 30th of March we had prices between 55 and 60 cents per kilo. Over the last few weeks prices have slowly been improving. They have been around and above 40 cents per kilo for a while now. Compared to last year these are certainly better figures. We were around 15 cents per kilo in this period last year."

Stable

The demand is coming from various countries, including Germany, Poland and Scandinavia. "There is a shortage of leek in these countries," explains the trader. "There is also more demand in France, as a lot has already been harvested in certain regions." He expects a stable market over the next few weeks. "I think we will remain around the same price level. As long as the new harvest of the young leek in the surrounding countries isn't ready for harvest yet, we will still be able to sell our leek to those buyers."

Demargro is slowly starting to sell more summer products. "The sales of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are starting to get going and the Belgian strawberries are also increasing in numbers. The strawberries are very good quality at the moment, but regarding price, it is still hard to compete with the cheaper Spanish strawberries," concludes Guy.
