Ontario apples high in demand

Although prices may be off, apples are currently high in demand due to consumers searching for a more health conscious snack; consumers also receive an excellent value. “To help maintain the interest and demand, the Ontario Apple Growers are conducting an in-store sampling program starting mid-February continuing to the end of March,” declares Kelly Ciceran, general manager of Ontario Apple Growers.

While acreage for apples within Ontario has remained stable for the past few years, the volume of apples per acre for fresh sale continues to increase as newer plantings give a higher percentage of fresh fruit and come into production at a quick rate. These apples are sold domestically, but are also exported to regions including: Mexico, US, UK, Caribbean, Cuba, and India.

“There is an increase in our market for many varieties,” explains Ciceran, “Each year there are removals and plantings taking place. There is certainly room in the marketplace for more acreage of Ontario apples – especially of the varieties that are in demand on the fresh market, such as Ambrosia, Honeycrisp and Gala.”
