Argentina: Mendoza to produce +100,000 tons of garlic

According to the Institute of Rural Development's Harvest Estimate, Mendoza's production of dry and clean garlic, estimated up to February 2015, should slightly exceed the 100,000 tons.

The report done by the IDR Horticultural Development's technical area stated that the production of red garlic amounted to 45,265 tons and that there was a " preponderance of calibres 5 and 4, which together represent 89% of the production, while there was a decrease in the calibres 6, which amount to 10% of the production, and very small frequency of calibres 3 and 7."

The purple garlic production was estimated at 43,935 tons and 61% of it is of calibre 5, while the calibre 6 represents 33% and 5% is of calibre 4.

The production of white garlic was estimated at 5,501 tons and the calibres 5 to 7 are widely prevalent. Estimates are that there will be 3,041 tons of clean dry early white garlic in February; 41% of which will be calibre 6. The calibres 5 and 7 will account for 36% and 18% of the production, respectively.

The entity that brings together garlic producers, packers and exporters stated that the production's quality was generally good. However, they said, there had been some problems with the calibres mainly because they had been planted late. They also stated that the health problems that affected the crops had been due to the rains during harvest time in November and December.
