More berries in North Rhine Westphalia, Germany

In 2014 in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia 141 companies produced berries. The berries were grown in a total area of 641 acres, and yielded 4,658 tons of berries, reports the German website Proplanta.de. This makes 2014's yield 6.8% more than 2013's.

With 600 of the acres being out in the open, most of the berries were grown in the fields. Red and white currants were the main types of berries grown, taking up 162 acres, which is more than one fourth (27.1%) of the total berry acreage. After the red and white currants, comes blueberries with 154 acres and blackberries with 122 acres. One third of the total berry crop consisted of red and white currants (33.7%).
