CA (BC): Greenhouse vegetable growers in homestretch of season

Moving into the fall months, British Columbia's greenhouse vegetable growers are into the final part of their season. With plenty of light and good weather, the province's growers have had a good year.

“The season here ends around the end of October and start of November,” said Tom Demma of the BC Vegetable Marketing Commission. “Every grower is different, but, as the clock ticks, there are fewer supplies and growers are getting ready for the next season.” Growers will soon begin raising seedlings in November in preparation for a spring harvest. Demma noted that they've had good weather throughout the summer, especially with regard to light levels, which is likely to make for good production levels.

“Production during the first two quarters was normal, really not very different from past years,” said Demma. “But the period from July through September is when we have the most output. So we won't know about that third quarter until October.” Though they won't know for certain, the signs during the summer months suggest a good crop was harvested.
