"The new season will be tense, but I'm not pessimistic by nature. New markets are added as well, but that does take some time", Martijn says. Just yesterday, a Chinese government delegation visited a grower that supplies to Fruvo, to check whether the strict conditions of the export protocol have been adhered to. "China is a gigantic market, but I am under no illusion of immediately conquering the Chinese market. It will take years to establish something there. Mind you, last year the same amount of pears went to China as we exported to Russia in two weeks."
"Our advantage is that, with 150 hectares of own cultivation, we have a certain scale, and sell everything ourselves as well. We do that from Northern Europe to North Africa, and from Ireland to Eastern Europe. While Russia was one of the larger buyers, we're not dependent on them. As yet, we confidently look forward to the season. The pears are keeping us busy, and apple harvest has also started."
