Honduras focuses on new products in EU export
According to SIECA, the Secretariat that stimulates the integration of the Central American economy, Honduras had a production surplus of more than $ 800 million in 2012. "The sweet potato is doing well in Europe, the banana export has gradually increased and the melon has acquired an important position," says Jacobo Regalado, minister of agriculture. He wants the economy to consider new products in a bid to diversify export.
Preferential Tariff
From 1 August, in an agreement with the EU, preferential tariffs for export will be used to achieve more diversity in products. Right now only Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama meet the requirements of the agreement.
Awareness about the benefits of this agreement, especially for fruit and vegetables, is growing, says Heriberto Amador, director of Senasa, the National Agricultural Health Service (Servicio Nacional de Sanidad Agropecuaria) of Honduras. "The reason for the agreement is to expand the market for the sector internationally.”
Investors in the export of Fide (Fundación para la Inversión y Desarrollo de las Exportaciones and Honduras) emphasize that organic agriculture also has great potential.
