Germany imports more and more organic food

German consumers spend 7 billion Euro a year on organic food, which comes to an average expenditure per person per year of 73.60 Euro.

Even though the German market doubled its agricultural area of organic food in 2012, the vast majority of these products, especially fruits and vegetables, must be imported because of the rise in domestic demand.

According to a study published by the University of Bonn, the demand for organic food in Germany is booming and sales have tripled over the period 2006-2012.

Essentially, the report shows that many of the organic products that are consumed in Germany, including fruits and vegetables, must be imported.

Currently, fruits and vegetables represent nearly 27 percent of the total turnover of organic food.
