New Israeli mandarin, Orri, patented in Spain

The Orri is a mandarin variety from Israel developed by scientists of the Volcani Institute by irradiating a local variety called Orah. Some of the most noteworthy characteristics of this mandarin are that they are easy to peel, have a low content of seeds and an excellent flavour.

Almost a decade ago, the Agricultural Research Organisation of Israel (ARO), which created the variety, requested the Orri variety to be accepted into the Spanish Register of Protected Varieties, to which end, after sanitising material from the variety at the Valencian Institute of Agricultural Research (IVIA), the said material was handed to the Institute's Varietal Identification Technical Examination Unit. This rigorous examination takes into account all field and laboratory work to check that the variety's material is different, stable and homogeneous compared to other varieties from the reference collection. This is an essential requirement for the variety's inscription into the Register of Protected Varieties.

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, once checked that all the legal requirements were met, decided to grant a Plant Variety Protection Certificate for the Orri hybrid mandarin to its developer, ARO (the Volcani Centre) from 17 January 2013 to 31 December 2043.

This implies that any third parties will require ARO's authorisation for any of the following activities involving the protected variety:

· The production or breeding

· Any preparations for production or breeding

· The supply

· The sale or any form of commercialisation

· The export

· The import

· The possession for any of the above reasons
